Welcome to the Discipleship Ministry Team page! If you're reading this, it means you're interested in the word "discipleship" (and maybe even serving!). You may have come here thinking, "I want to be a teacher at Living Hope, so I'll join this team." That's a possibility. But a teacher must be ready to apply what he/she knows, and this team gives you the opportunity for humble service. This is the place where we make everything possible for our teachers.

We see the words “living hope” as we enter our church every Sunday. What does it mean to have “living hope”? And, how does this kind of hope impact us as Disciples of Christ?

The term “hope” is often associated with a wishful desire for something in the future. But, this is not how the writers of the New Testament used the word “hope” in relation to Jesus Christ. Peter tells us in 1 Peter 1:13 (ESV), “Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” Peter is not talking about an uncertain future event. He is absolutely certain of the coming of Christ. Furthermore, the writer of Hebrews tells us in Hebrews 6:11 (ESV), “And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end.” We can have full assurance and confidence that Christ’s redemptive work is for us and will be extended to us in the future.

Christian hope is different because it is certain. Our “living hope” is in a living God of promises. His word “is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12 (ESV) His word is living, life-changing, and dynamic. We must allow it to shape our decisions and ultimately our lives as we live for Him.

Don't get me wrong—our teachers are great! The BEST! But sometimes they need a little help from others to be truly successful. That is how the Body works, right? So how can you be involved with this team? First of all, if you're a member of Living Hope, you're qualified to be on the team. Now that you know you are qualified, you need to know that you'll be expected to attend our team meetings (we need to know what God is showing you about discipleship!). But how can you serve? Here are a few areas:

  • Supplies Master: Our teachers can't remember everything and definitely could use some help with organization (i.e. need someone who can keep up with all the stuff we use and get it ordered, delivered, inventoried, and put away (such as pens, pencils, whiteboard markers, books, workbooks, publications, etc.). This may be multiple people. You'll be the ultimate Internet detective as you search for the best buy, the cheapest prices. You'll rub elbows with publishers as you negotiate great discounts for us.
  • Technology Superstar: With so many people using audio/video equipment at Living Hope, occasionally get broken or lost (have you ever lost a remote control?). We need working equipment when our classes meet, and you could be the one to make sure it happens. You would be responsible for making sure the equipment is working and ready for the teacher before the start of class. When things break, they need to be replaced. You may ask the Body for a donation, or you may need to find the best buy in town. You'll take care of special requests and know how to do it. You'll make sure equipment is available for classes or events that occur somewhere other than the College Station location. You might even form a small tech team to share this area of service.
  • Clerk Commander: Our teachers need copies. They need stuff typed up. They need to know calendar info. They need to know which classroom they will have, who will be in their class, etc. Could you possibly help keep these people in line?
  • Discipleship Promotions Officer: People often are surprised to hear that our classes have already started. They never heard about the classes and don't know what they're about. You'll be part of a group that will help with newsletter information, sign-ups for our classes, and calendar planning, and you'll work with our supplies group on order timing. There's more. Lots more. Interested?
